The Vault – Studio

What is the vault?

The vault is the nickname for my studio. In the past I would have called it a home studio, but it has grown a lot in the past years. From better gear, more insulation to even a professional acoustic measuring by Amptec. Who is Amptec? Amptec is a professional Belgian audio company (main distributor of e.g. Adam Audio) who did acoustic measurements for several large concert halls and even the musical ’40 – ’45.

Why the vault?

After several times moving, I wanted to have my own location to make music. But after making music, you obviously want to do more than simply playing it. The next step is recording it. So initially I make a small booth and did my recordings in it. All things fair, this did work but when I moved to the next step, I immediately noticed the gap in my … room. Spending €1500 on speakers and putting them in a bathroom, is basically throwing your money outside. So after working with an initial plan from Albertus Stoltenborg (Acoustic engineer from the Netherlands) I made my initial changes.

And then it went wrong… Late 2018 I was home due to surgery and couldn’t move that much. So spending studio time was a nice way of killing time. Yet, in the middle of mixing a friend’s band, my right speaker blew. As I had to wait a couple of weeks (which became a couple of months due to supplier issues), I decided to buy a second, cheaper set. And guess what, I notice that they sounded a lot different and had seemingly more bass. But all in all, you know that cheap audio monitors are boosted to sound better and not the actual flat response as they should be. So… next steps: add a subwoofer to my speaker set.

And when the subwoofer was delivered, I ended up contacting Amptec again. Why? Well I notice I was suffering phase issues and didn’t know how to solve it. After the measurements being done, I added diffusors on all walls and ended up with a nearly perfect studio

What is done in the vault?

Mainly use it to produce my own band, United and Identified, but also mix and master other bands. Interested in why to have someone do you mixing? Check the page mixing & mastering in the menu :).
